Stop The Spread

Client: New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, Colenso BBDO & Resn

‘Stop The Spread’ was the 2019 campaign for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation aiming to encourage women around Aotearoa to get regular mammograms as the best way to protect themselves from Breast Cancer. The campaign used interviews with real families affected by breast cancer, with voice audio and background atmospheres paired with the animations of dividing cells to tell each family’s story.

The campaign reached 79 percent of all Kiwis and, during October, which was awareness month, more women booked a mammogram than ever before, making it New Zealand’s most successful mammogram awareness drive.

The project was also awarded the prestigious Purple Pin at the Best Awards 2019.

Sound Design Approach

There were many challenges in finding the right tone and feel to fit a campaign with such powerful emotive stories from real Kiwi families affected by Cancer.

In creating the soundscapes and sound design, we were constantly balancing the seriousness of the subject with encouraging the women of Aotearoa to take action and book a mammogram. The role of the sound was to gently complement and support each voice sharing their stories.

Best Awards

The Gold Pin is coveted under each category as best in category, but its the very best piece of design in each discipline that is given the supreme Purple Pin and held up as work that raises the bar of New Zealand design.

Judge's comments: This project leveraged audio, often overlooked on the web, combined with a clever visual metaphor to deliver a powerful storytelling experience that could save lives."
