Our Changing City

Clients: Wellington City Council

Our Changing City, is an interactive pop-up installation designed to help people understand the climate disruptions we face and how we can adapt together.

The Vision

Wellington City Council received funding from Bloomberg for an innovative digital interactive project exploring climate change in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and the unique challenges we face. Wellington City Council’s winning concept aims to raise awareness about the local impacts of climate change and how we can adapt to them.

Wellington’s unique coastal location, steep hills, and wild weather make our city particularly vulnerable to natural hazards like flooding, coastal inundation, and slips. Climate science shows that climate change is already affecting Pōneke, with projections indicating these impacts are likely to get worse in the coming decades and beyond. It’s crucial we prepare for the future, to protect the people and places we love, and that’s where adaptation comes in.

Sound Design Approach

The brief called for three unique pieces of music to capture a spectrum of emotional tones and energy levels for the interactive storytelling experience.

The overall tone of the experience is reflective of the past, present, and future of Te Whanganui-a-Tara balancing a hopeful feel with an urgency toward positive change in understanding, behaviour and policy.

We love projects that allow us to explore multiple moods and genres - we were lucky enough to be able to create Taonga pūoro inspired atmospheres, field recording ambience and upbeat percussive rhythms. We crafted a full emotional journey from reflective and intense to a sense of lightness and momentum towards a better future.
